Hull’s Very Own Shoreditch
Walk around Hull’s historic Fruit Market and you will see Change is Happening. Quite literally, as along with the plethora of workmen and sea of orange barriers, the words are emblazoned across several desolate warehouses that are being transformed. This “guerrilla graffiti” campaign anticipates the result of an estimated £70 million being pumped into the once active and prosperous trading district of Hull.
The area is already a hotspot for culture and the arts, home to various independent cafes and unique galleries and museums, not to mention hosting the annual grassroots music festival Humber Street Sesh. However, we are about to witness the Fruit Market rapidly become the cultural centre for the city, after being injected with life by new innovative businesses.
We spoke to Chris Eastaugh, owner of the new Bulter Whites bar, the first of many eateries to open down the street, who is thrilled with the new development: “Some people have compared it to Shoreditch; the area is going to be full of interesting restaurants and galleries, there’s even talk of a gin factory.”
Speaking of bustling London areas, the recent promotional video for redevelopment features shots of the Fruit Market intertwined with snippets of Carnaby Street, Borough Market and, of course, good old trendy Shoreditch. Meanwhile, voices from the people of Hull tell us what they hope to gain from the refurbishment: “A place that celebrates individuality,” someone suggests. “Hull people running businesses; mavericks, innovators and creative types,” another chimes in. The vision from the development team is similar, as they wish to forge an “urban village” from the historical district, whilst embracing what was here before.
The latest major investment is the second edition of a locally renowned tandoori restaurant. Opening first on Beverley Road, the new Tapasya @ Marina is set to begin serving signature seasonal dishes from September, just moments away from the waterfront. It will be one of the first of many new eateries along with Butler Whites, paving the way for the area’s fine dining future.
And with stunning views of the River Hull and Humber Estuary, as well as its prime city location, it’s easy to see why the newly regenerated Fruit Market will attract more visitors to the city. It is hoped that this fresh cultural hub will be an extension of the artistic vibrancy of the thriving Avenues, also famous for their festival and café bar lifestyle. The arts will certainly be at the forefront of the renovation, with the installation of Stage @TheDock, a multi-purpose amphitheatre with panoramic vistas of The Deep and Hull’s waterways.
