Living in the Princes Avenue Area
The Avenues are fast becoming a cultural hub in the City of Hull. A hotspot for young professionals, the Princes Avenue area in particular is famous for its vast variety of bars and restaurants and has excellent transport links to the centre and the university. Many of the beautiful houses still hold their stunning original nineteenth century features – an added bonus if you are looking for a charismatic home.
The unique character of the area retains a turn-of-the-century feel, owing to the large Victorian houses, tall trees and attractive nearby public park. Initially developed as a middle-class housing district in the early 1900s, the area remained a popular residential space throughout the twentieth century, more recently emerging as a prominent commercial zone. Today it is known for its wide choice of gastropubs and wine bars, as well as a selection of specialist food outlets.
The fantastic scenery and Victorian aesthetic of Princes Avenue is continued in the adjacent Pearson Park. The secret garden was established as Hull’s first public park during the mid-1800s, after the land was gifted to the city by the prevalent ship owner, Zachariah Pearson. The space ties the present to the past with its contemporary play equipment and community facilities, which are all set in the traditional grounds. The glass conservatory and wildlife pond are natural hives for a multiplicity of life forms, including frogs and birds. With refreshments available in the café, as well as a lovely scented herb garden and vegetable patch, the park can be a great way to spend a day. The poet Philip Larkin is said to have drawn a lot of his inspiration from the setting, and living near the park would open up great opportunities for refreshing morning strolls.
Whilst the Avenue itself offers an abundance of convenient stores and exciting activity, Hull’s centre is only a short walk or bus journey away – making it an ideal choice for those who commute into the town on a regular basis. The university can also be easily reached from the Avenue, and whilst most students opt for the Newland area as their accommodation, Princes is the perfect option for those who would rather live on the outskirts of the undergraduate bubble.
A vibrant nightlife can also be enjoyed whilst living in the area. The array of bustling bars and eateries are just a stone’s throw away, creating an extremely popular social spot for young and old alike. Nonetheless, the long residential streets running away from the Avenue mean little disturbance for those who prefer a quiet night in.
Princes Avenue is a brilliant option for those looking for an inspiring place to live. With its good transport links, striking natural surroundings and thriving nightlife, the area offers the best of all worlds. The plethora of art festivals and cultural celebrations that 2017 is set to bring will add even more character to this already exciting space.
